Choosing a Physical Therapist: A Philadelphia Guide to Finding One You Trust
Choosing a physical therapist is partly about credentials and partly about trust. In our latest Instagram video, a patient’s favorite PT isn’t there for her appointment, so another PT covers her own face with a photo of the favorite. It’s a joke, but the instinct is common: people want the PT they trust.
Why Trust Matters in Physical Therapy
A systematic review of 13 studies found that a strong therapist-patient relationship was associated with better treatment adherence, better satisfaction in musculoskeletal conditions, and better physical function in some groups, including people with chronic low back pain. A study of 182 people with chronic low back pain found that better ratings of the relationship after the second session were associated with better function and less disability after 8 weeks. The evidence is weaker for pain relief itself.
What to Look for When Choosing a Physical Therapist
The American Physical Therapy Association’s advice for choosing a PT starts with the basics:
1) Make sure your PT is licensed. Look for “PT” or “DPT” after their name.
2) Ask whether the PT regularly treats your condition or people like you.
3) Remember you have the right to choose any PT in your state who participates in your health plan.
Then check the fit. You should feel comfortable asking questions about your treatment options and what to expect.
Comfortable Doesn’t Mean Easy
A PT you trust is also one who raises the challenge over time. Trust makes it easier to say when something is too much, and to try the harder exercise when you’re ready.
What If Your Favorite PT Is Out?
You don’t need a disguise. Every physical therapist on our team is trained in the same clinical framework, so your care stays consistent no matter which Philadelphia therapist you see. Tell the covering PT where you are in your plan and what’s been working.
