Head of the Schuylkill Regatta 2026: Zarett Rehab, Official Physical Therapy Partner in Philadelphia

Zarett Rehab & Fitness was the official physical therapy partner at the 56th Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, held October 24-25, 2026, on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. NBC10 reported that nearly 9,000 rowers competed. The event draws an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 spectators.

What Zarett Did at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta

Our tent stood at the Three Angels Statues on Kelly Drive on Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We offered free injury-prevention screenings and stretches, and rowers could spin a prize wheel for Zarett services between races.

Rowing Injuries: Why Back Pain Comes First

Jim Isihos, PT, DPT told NBC10, “Rowers have a lot of back pain.” Research agrees. The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine lists the low back as the most commonly reported injury region in rowing, with 12-month incidence of 32% to 53% in studies. Other common rowing injuries include rib stress injuries, shoulder problems, knee pain, and wrist and forearm tendinopathy.

What Raises the Risk

A review of low back pain in rowing named a history of back pain and prolonged ergometer use as significant risk factors. The AOSSM adds that low back injuries relate to training volume, technique, and movement patterns. Tired lumbar extensors and limited hip motion may add strain on the spine.

How to Lower Your Risk

These are general guidance, not guarantees:

1) Build erg time gradually.

2) Work on hip mobility and back endurance.

3) Report rib pain early. Rib stress injuries need an evaluation.

4) If you’ve had back pain before, get assessed before it returns.

When to See a Physical Therapist in Philadelphia

See a PT if back pain lasts more than a week, if you have sharp rib pain when you row or breathe, or if pain keeps coming back. Numbness or tingling down a leg needs urgent medical care.
