What DPT Stands For

Chaundy, our Exercise Physiologist, and Molly, our Physical Therapist, made a funny video showing someone who needs a doctor, but instead gets a physical therapist. However, our physical therapists hold a doctoral degree, so let’s explain!

DPT means Doctor of Physical Therapy. Since 2016, it’s the required entry-level degree for PT licensure in the US, replacing the master’s degree. Programs run about three years after a bachelor’s degree, through schools accredited by CAPTE. Graduates take the NPTE licensing exam before practicing.

Are They Doctors?

Yes, the same way a pharmacist with a PharmD is. It’s a clinical doctorate. PTs can be addressed as “Doctor.” It’s a separate track from a medical doctor (MD or DO). A DPT can’t write prescriptions or perform surgery. Training focuses on movement, function, and musculoskeletal issues.

What the Training Covers

Anatomy, physiology, neurology, pharmacology, biomechanics, clinical reasoning, plus supervised clinical rotations before graduation.

What This Means for You

Pennsylvania has a Direct Access law. It lets you start treatment with a PT for a musculoskeletal, neurological, or muscular issue without a physician referral, generally for up to 30 days before a referral is needed. This depends on the individual PT holding the state’s direct access certification.
